The dead rise!
A few months ago when [info]clynne was up north getting trained for her job, I picked up a copy of Last Night On Earth for her, since she loves zombie movies. Tonight we had [info]ipsin and [info]sarahliz over and played it two times. [info]sarahliz and I played the four heroes in each game, with
[info]clynne and [info]ipsin played the shambling undead. Both sides won once.

The scenario we were playing was the basic one, where the heroes have to kill off a certain number of zombies before a time limit expires. Unfortunately a reasonable strategy for the zombies is to try and avoid contact with the heroes and run out the clock, but it's less fun for them if they do so. In the first game, where the heroes lost, we were still getting the hang of things and got two of our heroes killed, which is an instant loss for them. In the second game we were more effective, and the game came down to two dramatic fights in the High School (where the sherriff's neer-do-well son carved up a couple of zombies with a chainsaw) and the Gun Shop (where Nurse Becky grabbed a pump shotgun and gave three zombies the what-for).

I'm eager to try out some of the other scenarios, like the one where the heroes have to stop the zombies from taking over a manor house.

I really do like the tension between defense (run from the humans!) and offense (hang out behind walls, being forced to mob the humans!) for zombies, and would love to try a few more scenarios.

I enjoy Last Night on Earth, also the expansion is pretty good, LNOE: Growing Hunger.

The Xbox/PC game Mass Effect -- which I've found peculiarly addictive and replayable for an RPG -- has a couple of types of creatures that are effectively "zombies." In one case, they're corpses animated by nanotech, in another semi-dead humans controlled by sentient plant spores, but they're mindless and they shamble and they come in hordes, so... zombies.

The way the weapons in the game are tuned, it turns out that the best way to take these things down is with a shotgun. Which I admire, because everyone knows that the ideal anti-zombie ranged weapon is a shotgun, and it's fitting that the game works out that way.

Tragically there is no chainsaw-equivalent in the game.
