Imagine it's a couple of hundred years ago and you're a resident of, say, Scotland. One day, a pall of ash clouds the sky and settles across the land for no reason that you or anyone you know can discover. Huddling in a church with all of your neighbors, praying, seems to make a whole lot of sense in that situation.

With fast international transmission of information, the number of inexplicable dread-inducing natural occurrences has dropped pretty much to zero, as far as I can tell. "Why are my eyes stinging? Oh, that volcano erupted in Iceland."
